World Wetlands Day 2026
Projects of the 4th Project Idea Competition
In celebration of the World Wetlands Day 2026, this video showcasaes insights into ongoing activities for the conservation of coastal wetlands along the arid–semiarid Pacific coast of Chile, Peru and Ecuador under the Coastal Wetlands Initiative.
Following the launch of the fourth Project Idea Competition on the World Wetlands Day 2025, we provided financial and technical support to nine locally led projects as a means to advance the implementation of the Initiative’s Action Plan. Building on the experience gained through previous competitions, these projects are implemented by local Civil Society Organizations, universities, and other local partners, sharing the vision to protect the chain of coastal wetlands across the three countries.
Focusing on environmental education, community engagement, applied research, and locally-anchored wetland governance, these projects are making important contribution to safeguard these unique coastal ecosystems that are essential for biodiversity and the wellbeing of local communities. Through collaborative approaches involving multiple stakeholders, persisting conservation threats are being addressed and long-term conservation and sustainable management of coastal wetlands strengthened.
Take a closer look at the new generation of projects supported through the 4th Project Idea Competition.
