Ilisu

We have all lost - Hasankeyf is sinking

The Ilisu dam in southeastern Turkey is now finally transforming 400 kilometres of the Tigris "biblical river" into a reservoir. It is an ecological catastrophe and lets 12.000 years old culture - among them one of the oldest cities of the world, Hasankeyf - sink. Tens of thousands of people have been driven from their homes.

The Foundation played a major role in the international campaign "Stop Ilisu - Save Hasankeyf" against dam construction. Our campaign leader Ulrich Eichelmann visited Hasankeyf at the beginning of October with media representatives.
